Norse Studies

by [LynnAnneBrown]

Before I begin I would like to Thank [moira hawthorne] who has agreed to be my guide and mentor
as I take this journey into the world of the Norse, ancient and modern.

and ask there that members would like to contribute to your wiki aswell

2009-01-26 [LynnAnneBrown]: Notes from moira:
hummm yes ... your wiki is coming together nicely now...
we should work on Bragi next... since this is also his time of year

 * association with Idun ( in Idun )

in Norse mythology, the goddess of spring or rejuvenation and the wife of Bragi, the god of poetry. She was the keeper of the magic apples of immortality, which the gods must eat to preserve their youth. When, through the cunning of Loki, the trickster god, she and her apples were seized by the giant Thiassi and taken to the realm of the giants, the gods quickly began to grow old. They then...
 * place in Germanic mythology ( in Germanic religion and mythology: Bragi )

Bragi appears in later sources as the god of poetry and eloquence. It is remarkable that the first recorded skald, living in the 9th century, was also called Bragi. Since there is no record of a cult of the god Bragi, some have suspected that the god and the poet are identical.

and than follow thru with Idunn

2009-01-26 [moira hawthorne]: oooooh just to warn you... if you hadnt noticed yet... Im an edit nut...

2009-01-26 [LynnAnneBrown]: I like that, More eyes can only make a good thing better

2009-01-26 [moira hawthorne]: "Bragi God of poetry and eloquence, Bragi is called the 'braggart' by Loki, and the word 'brag' is derived from his name. He is married to Idun." Old Norse bragr means 'eloquent'. Grimm cites bragr karla = vir facundus 'eloquent man'.

2009-01-26 [moira hawthorne]: oooh and while I lookin for Bragi I got Baldr

Norse God Baldr, who is a son of Odin and the Goddess Frigg, who gave us the word Friday (Friggs Day).
The story of Baldr is similar to that of Achilles. After a dream in which she foresees his death, Baldr's mother Frigg obtains promises from all objects on the earth to never harm her child, all but the mistletoe, which Frigg sees as inconsequential. In this way Baldr appears indestructible. In fact the gods start to spend their spare time hurling objects at Baldr for entertainment as he is impervious to harm. However, Loki (the mischief god) hearing that mistletoe did not swear an oath makes a spear (or arrow) from it and tricks Baldr's brother into throwing the spear at his brother, thus killing him. This action is said to bring about the chain of events that lead to the end of the world.

2009-01-26 [moira hawthorne]: i believe... but than I cant find support to this... that it was said of Bragi that he had golden chains from his tongue to the ears of his listeners / audience

2009-01-26 [Linderel]: Ooo, interesting. I might have something to contribute to this whenever I finally get around to reading my Viking mythology books.

2009-01-26 [moira hawthorne]: His [tongue or torq which did you mean] is carved with runes
his tounge I believe, I will need to study primary source material

tounge is not a word... thats why I was asking you if you meant to write tongue or torq

2009-01-26 [LynnAnneBrown]: One of those words I have consitently misspelled since I can remember, it is tongue, thanks for bringing that to my attention.

2009-01-26 [moira hawthorne]: ok we will go with tongue... makes sense that way with what norse use as methaphors anyways... they are just like the bloody celts.. beauty and viciousness entined

2009-04-07 [Lothuriel]: Nice...<img:stuff/cheshmak.gif>

2009-11-16 [wicked fae mage]: I remember some of the Norse mythology stories ^.^

I rememeber Thor, and Sif with her pretty hair...Fenris being I believe Zui's pet wolf, Ragnarok being the end of all...*pokes chopstick up nose in hopes to stir up information*

2009-11-16 [moira hawthorne]: Fenris being I believe Zui's pet wolf ???
huh?

2009-11-16 [wicked fae mage]: I think I read that somewhere. It might not be accurate, but I remember a story about Zui being given the duty of babysitting Fenris.

2009-11-17 [moira hawthorne]: i dont think Zui is even a norse name... and Ive never heard of a god by that name..let alone in charge of Fenris/Fenrir

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenrir

2009-11-17 [wicked fae mage]: I looked into it further and it was Ziu, also known as Tyr. He had an interaction with Fenris when he placed his hand on the wolf's mouth as a gesture of kindness and lost his hand.

I think the site mixed up the story of Fenris being restrained by the chains since Ziu was asked to take care of the wolf, put in charge on him in that sense

2009-11-17 [moira hawthorne]: I think you need a new site.. that one doesnt seem very accurate

2009-11-17 [wicked fae mage]: It was from a few years ago....that I read that...
I found out that it mostly had a few names right later on.
I don't even think that the site is around any longer.
